Session Summary: Midjourney V8 Alpha — Bookmark Image Series

Date: March 31, 2026
Participants: Doug (Forefront Systems) + Claude

Project Overview

Creation of a series of bookmark images (aspect ratio 2:6) using Midjourney V8 Alpha, rendered in the watercolour style of Charles Santore (known for the classic illustrated edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland). Santore’s defining aesthetic: transparent watercolour washes over fine ink linework, visible cold-press paper texture, soft wet-on-wet background washes, crisp, detailed brushwork concentrated on faces and focal elements.

Bookmark 1: The Queen of Hearts

Source work: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland — Lewis Carroll
Subject: The Queen of Hearts seated on her gothic throne, gazing directly at the viewer with cold, disgruntled, imperious disdain.

Prompt Evolution

  • The first prompt produced strong composition and costume detail, but rendered it in cinematic photorealism rather than Santore’s watercolour style.
  • Second prompt (successful) explicitly named the medium: “transparent watercolour washes over fine ink linework, visible cold-press paper texture, soft wet-on-wet background washes”. Also added Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth as triangulating style references. Removed the word “hyperreal,” which was pulling toward photorealism.

Result

Pale masklike face, dark-ringed eyes, cold contempt. Gothic throne in pale ink against moody atmospheric washes of violet and teal. Red-and-gold gown as a compositional anchor. Described as: “calm, cool, dispassionate, regal aggression.”
Doug’s invented line: “Alice. What a peculiar name for a peculiar child.”

Bookmark 2: Ludwig van Beethoven

Source inspiration: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F major, The Pastoral — Doug’s all-time favourite piece of music after 50+ years of listening.
Subject: Beethoven in his early 40s, seated at a rustic writing desk in a forest clearing, quill in hand, gazing at nature with rapt wonder. Storm clouds are gathering above the treeline.

Prompt (successful first attempt)

Key elements: informal hiking clothes, loose linen shirt open at the collar, birds perched nearby (a nod to the famous birdsong trio in the first movement), dramatic storm sky (second-movement thunder), Santore/Pyle/Wyeth style retained from Bookmark 1.

Result

Luminous golden sky breaking through forest canopy, dramatic clouds, and a strong rustic figure. Open shirt rendered his “rough, elemental physical presence” — vital rather than courtly. The storm is coming but hasn’t arrived: the exact emotional register of the Pastoral’s middle movements.

Thematic Resonance Between the Two Bookmarks

A dialectical pairing identified during the session:

Queen of HeartsBeethoven
Power turned inwardPower turned outward
Cold enclosureOpen radiance
Nature excluded, subordinatedNature received, dissolved into
Even her roses were painted redThe trees spoke to him

“As a pair on a shelf, they tell a small, complete story about the two things you can do with a sovereign inner life: you can impose it, or you can offer it.”

Both rendered in Santore’s hand — same medium, same golden age lineage — making the contrast sharper through visual kinship.

Working Prompt Template (Santore Style)

For future bookmarks in this series:

Possible Connection to Current Work

Doug is switching to a session on The Chromatic Taxonomy of Mage — The Red Mage, which may share thematic DNA with this session’s core insight: two distinct aesthetic or conceptual traditions meeting to produce an emergent third. Also referenced: The Mirror and The Flame — a cosmogonic myth Doug crafted with another AI, featuring Anthropos and Gaia emerging from chaos as Logos.
